Have you ever tried to understand why you have fever after a common cold or cold. When external infection spreads in your body, white blood cells are needed to remove its effect. Just think what will happen if there is a shortage of white blood cells in our body. Normal fever will become dangerous for us. White blood cell is the immune system of our body which protects us from various infections. Today in this article we will learn how to increase the number of white blood cells, and why these are necessary for us.

What is White Blood Cells?

White blood cells play an important role as a major component of the immune system. They provide protection to our body by searching for viruses, bacteria, and fungi etc. in the blood and destroying them. White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are of different types. All of them have their separate work, some destroy the virus directly, and some attack the infected cells. Some white blood cells also play their role in allergic reactions. Let's know what type of white blood cells are there.

Types of White Blood Cells:-

White blood cells are present as the major component of our blood, which protects us from diseases and infections of the body. There are many types of white blood cells, all of which have different functions.

Normally all people produce around 100 billion white blood cells per day. There are usually 4000 to 11000 white blood cells per micro liter of blood which is in normal condition. However, if the person is a race, then their number may vary. There are different types of white blood cells which are as follows:

1. Lymphocytes:- These are important for making antibodies that protect the body from intestinal worms such as large parasites, bacteria, viruses etc. Lymphocytes have 3 cells - B cells, T cells and Natural Killer cells. B cells recognize viruses and release antibodies against them, while T cells and N cells fight viruses and cancer-infected cells.
2. Neutrophils:- These are powerful white blood cells that destroy bacteria and fungi.
3. Basophils:- These alert the body to infection by secreting chemicals in the bloodstream, as well as help in fighting allergies.
4. Eosinophils:- They are responsible for destroying parasites and cancer cells.
5. Monocytes:- They are responsible for attacking and destroying germs or bacteria that enter the body.
When necessary, monocytes migrate to other organs such as the spleen, liver, lungs, and bone marrow into a cell called macrophage.

Macrophages are responsible for many functions, including removing dead or damaged tissues, destroying cancer cells, and regulating the immune response.

How white blood cells help us: -

White blood cells protect our body from infection by blocking the entry of bacteria and viruses into our body. These cells also facilitate the production of antibodies and help in destroying infectious components as well as cancer cells.
The number of white blood cells fluctuates due to several reasons. The number of white blood cells (WBCs) in your body increases when your body is functioning as if you are running or exercising. If you are sleeping or resting then the number may be reduced at this time. However, in some cases, they may be severely reduced in number, which are the reasons which can cause a decrease in white blood cells.

Cause of white blood cell loss:-

The spongy tissues inside your bones, called osteoblasts, produce white blood cells. There may be the following reasons for the decrease in the number of white blood cells.

1.viral infections
2.Congenital disorder
3.Cancer
4.Autoimmune disorder
5.poor nutrition
6.alcohol abuse
7.Serious infections that consume a lot of white cells to prevent them.
The lack of white blood cells in the body may not be effective in fighting infection, and results in a condition called leukopenia. Let us know what are the symptoms of decreasing WBC.

Symptoms of deficiency of white blood cells :-

People who are deficient in white blood cells may have the following symptoms that indicate a possible lack of WBC in the body:

1.High fever
2.Shortness of breath, chest pain
3.Cough, sore throat
4.Mouth sores
5.Swelling and skin rash
6.Chills, sweating, night sweats
7.Lose weight
8.Stomach pain
9.Syncope
