                         Kidney stone

What is kidney stone?

Kidney stone is a crystalline and hard mineral material, which is formed within the kidney or in our urinary tract. Kidney stones are a common cause of hematuria (blood in urine) and often cause severe pain in the abdomen, groin, or flank. Kidney stones are sometimes called renal calculi.

The condition of kidney stone or multiple stones is called nephrolithiasis. However, stone is known as urolithiasis in other places in the urinary tract. Anyone can develop the disease, but people with certain diseases and conditions or taking certain medications such as calcium-containing antacids, diuretics and protease inhibitors are more susceptible to the disease.

The disease is more common in men than
women.

Urinary stones, which mostly develop in patients between 20–49 years old and those who have suffered more than one attack of the disease, are always prone to developing stones. Kidney stones are more common among residents of industrialized countries than bladder stones. The opposite holds true for residents of the developing world, where stone is most common in bladder. Dietary factors are believed to play a major role in making this difference. Over the last few decades, it has been observed that the incidence of kidney stone development has increased, which is related to the worldwide obesity epidemic.

People with chronically elevated uric acid levels are also more prone to formation of kidney stone related to uric acid. Pregnant women, although small in number, sometimes develop kidney stones. Factors that contribute to the formation of kidney stones during pregnancy include a slowing of urine passage, as her increased uterus leads to decreased bladder capacity and increased levels of progesterone in her body.

Dehydration, often due to reduced fluid intake over time, leads to the formation of kidney stones.

In case of medical emergency non-contrast CT scan done on patients, because it is done rapidly and it helps in curing Planck and other causes of abdominal pain.

However, in recent times, it is believed that a CT scan exposes patients to greater radiation, with ultrasound scans used to diagnose kidney stones with plane abdominominal X-rays. When patients are put on medication, it has been observed that small stones are passed naturally through the urine. However, for large stones (over 9–10 mm) lithotripsy is performed with the help of shock waves to break large stones into smaller pieces, so that they can pass through the urinary system.
